After the death of a patriarch, family accusations over division of property are common and seldom make the news, much less set a nation talking. And yet, the internet is exploding over this issue … coz the accused is the Prime Minister of Singapore and the accusers are his siblings. Some more the house in question is 38 Oxley Road – the former residence of our beloved Lee Kuan Yew.
To make matters worse, Lee Wei Ling and Lee Hsien Yang had to make this statement ” “We do not trust Hsien Loong as a brother or as a leader. We have lost confidence in him.”
It also doesn’t help that Hsien Yang’s eldest son – Li Shengwu – expressed worry about “lack of checks on abuse of power” of the Singapore gahmen on his Facebook page. A publicity stunt to be in limelight? He probably tried before this, but no one cared or gave a damn about Shengwu.
You heard the accusation. Lee Hsien Loong is doing this for his own legacy. But Hsien Loong has always maintained on public records that speaking as the son of Lee Kuan Yee, he would like to see the wishes of Lee Kuan Yee (as stated in the will) carried out once his sister moved out. However, it will be up to the Government of the day to consider the matter.
Hsien Loong also shared that his father was always conscious that he did not act alone, but as a member of a team. His core team included Goh Keng Swee, S. Rajaratnam, Othman Wok, Hon Sui Sen, Lim Kim San, among others. As such, the idea of a Founders Memorial was mooted.
Hsien Loong also constantly maintained that he will leave the decision of the next Prime Minister to the 4G Ministers. Just like he was selected as the Prime Minister of his cohort. Hsien Loong has also publicly declared that he will be stepping down in the next few years?
Does this look like the action of a power hungry politician bent on staying in power? I think not. If you ask for my guess, it is probably because Wei Ling and Hsien Yang were not the favorites of dear old dad and this is their chance to get back at their brother.
If nothing else, this statement by Wei Ling and Hsien Yang does nothing but creating a rift between the Lee family. I doubt the cousins will hang out with each other and that 2018 Chinese New Year will be awkward. Haiz…
