After a heated debate over content that was sent by a reader, we decided to publish it. As the contributor puts it, there is always two sides to a coin. Enjoy:
“Been thinking much about the recent ‘coming out’ of Dr Lee Wei Ling.. wrote a little note here since I’m not going to send to ST (who am I to get them to publish my article anyway)
A CHANGE of heart or more than meets the eye? It seems that Dr Lee Wei Ling has turned her back on the Government.
Lee Wei Ling has always been some sort of maverick, a known fact among observers of local affairs. One has to wonder if she is given privileges or able to get away with murders since she is the daughter of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew.
Anyhow, it was a surprise reading her Facebook post on 25 March 2016, stating that the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew would have cringed given the hero worship one year after his death. Although some of us feel somewhat similar, too much fanfare and wayang-ness from many parts of the country.
Mr Lee Kuan Yew would most likely not approve of such commemoration; but is it not wrong for people wanting to remember him in their own way? There are always two sides to a coin.
After all, Mr Lee Kuan Yew is synonymous to Singapore. My peers and I grew up hearing his name and he is the only person we can identify on TV during the National Day parades. He is your Papa and at the same time, he also belongs to the Nation.
Rereading her Facebook post, I can’t help but to feel a sense of hypocrisy.
Her book, A Hakka woman’s Singapore Stories was published after Mr Lee’s death. Artefacts from Oxley Road home were also on exhibition. In fact, Lee Wei Ling has been writing countless articles about Mr Lee Kuan Yew, which many Singaporeans like us, are keen to gain insights on. It’s just like the Brits following the Royal Family.
Would the story be the same if Lee Wei Ling is not Lee Kuan Yew’s daughter?
She criticised people for using her father’s name but she has been using it for her own fame. All this while ….. Is she a hypocrite? What is her agenda?
Her latest FB post indicates she stopped writing for SPH as they did not want to publish her letters. Why the outburst? What has transpired?
Perhaps she is hateful that Singapore took away her time with Papa. Perhaps now is the time to unleash since what holds her is gone. Her escape is to be eccentric initially but now, no one really knows …..
“I’m eccentric. And I want to continue being eccentric and I see no reason why I should conform to so-called normal standards.” – Lee Wei Ling
Being LKY’s daughter, she should have known better.
