Lui Tuck Yew – Unattached and Available Part III

It looks like Ah Lui is still single and available…at least on his Facebook page. But let’s face it, he is here to stay. In case, you want to follow the saga, here’s part I and II.

While I suspect he wants to lead a low profile quiet life after retirement, he has become a mainstay; an icon; a name confirm everyone will know for whatever reasons. However, his low profile life is not meant to be.

Recently, he made to the Vulcan Post’s Best Viral Memes of 2015 That Made Us LOL.

Then, in the Middle Ground’s articles, And on Saturday… as well as Off with (whose) head?, the respective authors continue to use him as an analogy. Although in my personal opinion, this horse beaten to death liao.

There are some out there who are wondering what Ah Lui is up to these days. Recently, he made it to the news again!

The Straits Times reported that current Minister of Transport Khaw Boon Wan was happy to have met his predecessor Lui Tuck Yew at the Singapore Maritime Foundation’s New Year cocktail reception. What a coincidence.

Then, turns out he and his wife, at the invitation of Ms Denise Phua who they both served together at Moulmein-Kallang GRC, were at Pathlight School’s early morning assembly to speak with the students. At this time, I want to give a shout out to Ms Denise Phua for remaining friends with Ah Lui. Not sure how the world of politics work but I get the impression friendships are fickle in this line of work.

Yesterday, he was given props again in the Straits Times in the article She started her fashion label with less than $2,000 about Ms Vivienne Lin, a local designer who followed her passion and overcame all odds to start her label. Turns out the unassuming Ah Lui who never boast about his deeds made an impact in Ms Lin’s life and career by showing up as a Guest of Honour at one of her shows when he was Minister at MICA (Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts).

Even her husband thought she was crazy when she invited him. He said to her “What makes you think you can ask a minister to your kacang puteh event?”, Apparently, he did (although took some convincing plus the fact that MICA gave her a grant) and it made an impact in her life that she still remembered this to recount in the article for the Straits Times.

On a side note, notice the Straits Times gave it two different headlines. Targeted marketing. I like that!

Here’s the excerpt in which Ms Lin mentioned Ah Lui.

On that note, I just want to say he is definitely a class act and I wish him nothing but the best. Hope he is enjoying retirement or should I say, his “single and available” life with his family.

I leave you with this FB post from Mr Zainal Sapari, MP for the Pasir Ris East Constituency which is part of the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, which reconfirms that Ah Lui is definitely a guy you want to be friends with.

Thank You Zainal
